Klara and the Sun by Ishiguro Kazuo
Klara and the Sun is Nobel Laureate, Kazuo Ishiguro's eighth novel. Klara is an AF, Artificial Friend, who is bought from a store (as you might buy a vacuum cleaner) as a companion to lonely teenager, Josie. A story told from the perspective of solar-powered Artificial Intelligence is at its core a tale investigating the heartbreak and light of the human experience through an unreliable narrator: Klara sees much of the world from a child's perspective who doesn't quite seem to grasp the emotional depth of the human world. It is in this juxtapositioning between Klara's beaming curiosity and the darkness of what is really going on which that makes this novel engaging and complex. Read or listen before the movie adaptation comes to the cinemas this year!
